If you’ve called around for ceramic coating quotes in South Jersey, you’ve probably heard numbers all over the place. That’s not because detailers are making it up. It’s because “ceramic coating” can mean very different amounts of work. Here’s what actually moves the price, so you can compare quotes apples to apples.
1. How much paint prep the car needs
This is the biggest factor, and the one most people don’t see. A coating locks in whatever is under it. If the paint has swirls, water spots, or haze, those need to come out before the coating goes on, and that’s done with machine polishing (paint correction).
- Newer car, good paint: a decontamination wash and a one-step polish is usually enough.
- Daily driver with visible swirls: often a two-step correction (compound, then polish).
- Neglected or dark paint: may need a multi-step correction, which is a full day or more of work on its own.
A quote that seems cheap often skips this step. The coating goes over swirled paint, and you’re stuck with those swirls for years.
2. The coating’s rated durability
Coatings come in different grades. Ours are System X, rated for 3, 6, or 10 years depending on the package. Longer-rated coatings cost more, but they also hold up better to road salt, chemicals, and UV. If you plan to keep the car a long time, the longer coating usually costs less per year.
3. Vehicle size
A Civic and a Suburban are not the same amount of paint. More surface means more time to decontaminate, polish, and coat, and more product.
4. What’s included beyond the paint
Some packages coat only the painted panels. Others include wheels, glass, or trim. When you compare quotes, ask exactly which surfaces are coated and what prep is included.
Questions to ask any detailer before you book
- What prep is included? Is there a polish, and how many steps?
- Do you measure paint depth before polishing?
- Which coating brand and grade, and what is it rated for?
- Is the coating applied indoors?
- How should I wash the car afterward?
